Production [edit]

Director John Carney conceived the premise for Begin Again several years before he began to write the screenplay in 2010.[2] The story was partly inspired past his ain experiences as a musician in a ring,[2] and from his impression of the artists and repertoire (A&R) executives of record labels during the 1990s, which formed the footing of Dan's character.[4] Carney wrote the script, which was initially titled Can a Song Save Your Life?, earlier he, Glen Hansard, and Gregg Alexander began writing the songs; he wanted "to work the music effectually the story, instead of the other way effectually."[4] The script's style of featuring songs as a natural element of the story was inspired by the 1954 Judy Garland musical pic A Star Is Born, and is also employed in Carney's earlier film Once (2007).[5] Carney starting time pitched the pic in 2010 to filmmaker Judd Apatow, who produced the film alongside Tobin Armbrust and Anthony Bregman whose product company Sectional Media financed the picture show's US$8 meg budget.[2]

Before casting Keira Knightley as Gretta, Carney considered casting a pop vocalizer such as Adele in the main role, equally well as a number of other actresses including Scarlett Johansson, who was at one point attached to the project.[ii] [6] Knightley, who had never sung professionally before, prepared for the role past training with a vocal coach and learning how to play a guitar.[vii] Mark Ruffalo was Carney's kickoff choice for the role of Dan,[2] and agreed to star in the film afterward Carney sent him the first draft of the screenplay.[vi] Singer Adam Levine was also the merely person Carney considered casting as Dave, and won the role after talking with Carney over Skype and recording some dialogue as an audition;[viii] he declined to be paid for appearing in the picture.[9] Although he had had modest acting parts on television before, Begin Once more marked his beginning part in a film.[8] Carney approached James Corden to appear in the picture show after admiring Corden's performance in the pb function in a Broadway production of One Man, Two Guvnors.[10]

Principal photography of the film began in New York Urban center on July 2, 2012,[eleven] and lasted for 23 days.[12] Carney chose to film in Manhattan's lesser known neighborhoods that would be more than recognizable to locals than tourists. Specific locations included Greenwich Village, the Eastward Hamlet, Times Square, and Washington Square Park.[13] [fourteen] Rather than performing live during filming, the actors sang to pre-recorded tracks. In social club to save money on hiring a full crew and extras, some scenes—including one in Times Foursquare—were shot late at night with a handheld camera.[2] The rooftop location near the Empire State Edifice is located at 28 W 36th St.[15] [16] [17] [eighteen]

Carney's criticism of Knightley [edit]

During a series of interviews to promote his film Sing Street in 2016, Carney repeatedly criticized Knightley'due south performance and comportment while making Begin Once more. When asked virtually the critical reaction to Sing Street past The Contained, Carney responded unprompted that "information technology'southward a modest personal movie with no Keira Knightleys in information technology. It's actually rewarding."[19] In the same interview, Carney also referred to her repeatedly every bit a model, despite the fact that Knightley had been working professionally as an actress since childhood, proverb "I'll never make a moving-picture show with supermodels once again." He also criticized her in an interview with Heyuguys.com, proverb, "I just think with Keira it was like asking her to practise something that she could not do."[20] Though he did non specifically name Knightley, he did, in an interview with Den of Geek, say that his desire to brand Sing Street came from his "experience of working, allow's face information technology, with a model on my last film".[21] Filmmakers Massy Tadjedin, Mark Romanek, Lorene Scafaria and Lynn Shelton, who had worked with Knightley on other films, tweeted their support for her subsequently Carney's comments.[22]

Carney later on tweeted a public apology maxim he felt like "a complete idiot" and saying that Knightley was "nothing simply professional and dedicated" during the filming of the movie.[23]

In 2019, when asked nearly Carney'south comments, Knightley accepted his apology and revealed that she was non shocked by his earlier comments as they had not gotten along during filming.[24] [25]
